Say goodbye to flushed cheeks and oily skin
If you’ve been feeling like it’s a lot hotter lately—you’re not imagining things. According to the Meteorological Service Singapore, April is climatologically one of the warmest months of the year, and the first fortnight of May is expected to range between 25°C and 34°C. In fact, a few warm days during this period are expected to hit around 35°C! Whew.
Unfortunately, hot weather is detrimental for skin. Not only does the heat increase the likelihood of acne and breakouts, you also get clogged pores because of sweat. Trust us, humidity messes with even those with perfect skin types!
Here are some easy things you can do right now to keep your skin looking fresh:
1. Go for powders/waterproof gels when doing your makeup
To avoid having your makeup base melt off your face, dab on your foundation in light layers and set with loose powder. Having a sheer base also lets your skin breathe, and helps you avoid the appearance of clogged, large pores. If you need more coverage for blemishes, use a spot concealer and build up the amount where appropriate.
2. Always finish off a cleanse with cold water
Washing your face is a tricky thing. It’s a simple procedure, yet it’s likely you’re not optimising this fundamental skincare step enough. For instance, cleansing your face during a hot shower may seem like a logical solution, but face washes generally do not work well on heated skin. Dedicate time for a proper cleansing routine at the sink, use lukewarm water to open pores before using a gentle cleanser, then do a final rinse with cold water on your face. Don’t forget to follow up with toner and moisturizer to lock in moisture.
3. Exfoliate to keep skin smooth and clear
If you’re a habitual makeup wearer, chances are you already have a couple of clogged pores on your face, and perhaps even dead skin buildup due to the number of products that sit atop your skin every day. Throw excess oil and sebum courtesy of the hot weather into the mix, and you know you’ve got some serious skincare work to do! In an interview with Bustle, Dr. Kally Papantoniou, a cosmetic dermatologist in New York, suggests exfoliating at least once a week during warmer months to prevent dull skin. Look for a face scrub that contains little exfoliating bits—those are gentle enough to not aggravate skin, while sloughing off dead skin cells from the surface of your skin.
4. Refrigerate your moisturizers
Our Cell Regenerate Gel Cream and Ultra Moisturizing Repair Gel bundle makes the perfect summer combination due to their lightweight consistency, while combining benefits like soothing red, irritated skin and replenishing moisture and renewing skin cells. Want a quick, cooling boost? Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research in New York, shares in an interview with Allure that the main benefit of refrigerating products is enjoying the cooling sensation on your skin when applying them. If you have red, irritated skin from the unbearable outdoors, you might just want to try this tip out now.
5. Invest in a face mist — we highly recommend green tea
There are many beauty brands that offer face mists promising the benefits of minerals and a myriad of fancy ingredients, but less is more on a humid day. Invest in a lightweight face mist that contains green tea, which boasts anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce the redness of irritated skin, as well as keep acne and breakouts at bay. Plus, it's fantastic at setting makeup and making your skin look instantly plump.
6. And remember to drink lots of water
Your body is composed of 65% water, and most of it is in your cells. When the weather is scorching, your body tends to lose water faster—which means you need to replenish it at a rate that’s as quick. Your skin shows signs when it’s dehydrated, such as looking sunken or more ‘hollow’, and no amount of makeup will be able to help you! Be sure to schedule regular water breaks or set alarms on your phone if necessary.
Singapore is known for its notoriously hot weather, which is why you should take the right steps to make sure your skincare has enough hydrating elements to keep your complexion clear. Sunscreen is a must, and should be reapplied every two hours if you perspire a lot or enjoy hitting the beach/swimming for leisure.
